Brazilian Senator Demands End to Regulated Sports Betting
Less than six months after its launch, a Brazilian senator is already calling for the total shutdown of Brazil's regulated sports betting industry.

Senator Eduardo Girão believes that betting is negatively influencing Brazil's football sector and is now pushing for the abolition of existing betting regulations.
The senator made the request formally during a Senate plenary session on Friday, May 16, emphasizing the need for urgent action.
Girão also attributed the rise in addiction and family debt to Brazil's online betting sector, and demanded a complete ban.
We need to stop this humanitarian tragedy that is betting. Only a few win: tycoons. And those who lose are millions. For me, it has to end. I have a bill to end it, to ban sports betting again. The damage has already been done, the signs are there. And there are still people with zero responsibility towards the Brazilian population, with zero social commitment, who are thinking of putting casinos and bingo halls to a vote in this House in the coming weeks.
Additionally, Girão argues that the football sector's reliance on betting sponsorships is detrimental to the sport and wants the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) to probe the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) for potential misconduct.

A long-standing Anti-Gambling Agenda
Girão has been a longtime critic of gambling in Brazil. Late last year, he introduced a bill to overturn betting laws before the market's launch. However, the measure stalled, and the regulated betting market went live on January 1.
In addition to his sports betting ban bill, Girão is sponsoring PL 3,405/2023, a proposal to ban celebrities from promoting sports betting.
The Sports Commission will vote on the legislation, alongside PL 2,985/2023, which limits the broadcast times for betting advertisements tomorrow, Wednesday, May 21.
Should the Sports Commission greenlight the bills, they'll proceed to the Communication and Digital Law Commission for final review and a decision on becoming law.
From all indications, chances are slim that Girão's betting ban bill will advance.
Earlier this year, Girão's attempt to become Senate president fell short, with Davi Alcolumbre, a strong advocate for the betting industry, emerging as the winner. This outcome makes it even more challenging for Girão's bill to gain traction.
