Massachusetts Gaming Commission Fines MGM for Underage Violations
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has fined MGM Springfield (NYSE: MGM) for a number of underage violations.
The resort casino has been hit with an $18,000 civil administrative penalty for three violations involving underage people, that took place on December 25 and 31 2020, as well as on January 20 2021.
In each case, people under the age of 21 were able to play in the casino and in one case, the person was served an alcoholic drink. After each incident, the casino made notifications to state officials
MGM Springfield must now submit a plan to the commission’s Investigation and Enforcement Bureau for improving its compliance. It must address extra training for security and table games personnel in regards to minors.
The MGC takes seriously our obligation to ensure the safety and well-being of underage persons and minors...We appreciate MGM Springfield’s commitment to taking all necessary steps to ensure that underage persons and minors do not access the gaming floor.
A spokesperson MGM Springfield said in a statement that they respect the decision of the MGC and that they will continue to educate players about the resort’s policy regarding minors under the age of 21. The statement added, “We take these underage violations very seriously and have increased employee training and are continually evaluating and refining our security procedures.”
Last week, the MGC also released its latest crime report that focuses on the six months leading up to February 2021. It showed that there was a small increase in crime during the period, including shoplifting, drunk driving, fraud, and identity theft. However, it found no clear connection to the casino.
