Gaming Associations Call for Resolution in 1-800-GAMBLER Dispute
The American Gaming Association (AGA) and the Responsible Online Gaming Association (ROGA) have jointly released a statement advocating for a mutually agreeable solution regarding the ongoing dispute surrounding the 1-800-GAMBLER hotline.

Under a licensing agreement, the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) pays $150,000 annually to the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey(CCGNJ) for the right to use the 1-800-GAMBLER number nationwide. However, since the initial three-year contract expired in May, the efforts of the NCPG to renew it have hit a roadblock.
Following failed attempts to engage CCGNJ in arbitration and communication between the two organizations broke down, NCPG exercised its contractual right to seek a court-issued restraining order, ensuring the number remains active during the dispute.
Till date, the CCGNJ has not made public any reasons behind its refusal to renew the contract with NCPG. However, a court date for the dispute is scheduled for September 3.
Organizations with a vested interest in preserving the number are now calling on the two parties to reach an agreement that prioritizes the hotline's stability and accessibility.
The statement from AGA and ROGA read: Any disruption to the 1-800-GAMBLERoperations—or worse, a degradation of the helpline’s capacity to deliver timely, culturally competent, and clinically appropriate referrals—would significantly endanger the ability for individuals or friends and family members of individuals who may be experiencing problems to learn more and access care.
“Further, a lapse in service risks causing widespread consumer confusion, undermining years of education and awareness efforts by operators, regulators, and advocates alike.”
Currently, the 1-800-GAMBLER hotline remains operational under the status quo due to a temporary restraining order granted by a New Jersey court.
