GBGB to Challenge Welsh Greyhound Racing Ban in Court
The Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) is seeking a judicial review of the Welsh government's decision to ban greyhound racing.

In February 2025, Welsh Ministers announced plans to phase out greyhound racing in Wales, citing concerns over animal welfare and reports of harm and mistreatment to some dogs.
One of the key factors behind the ministers' decision to investigate and ban the sport was a petition signed by over 35,000 individuals. It was also prompted by cross-party pressure.
At the time, Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies stated that while no specific timeline had been set for the ban, it could be implemented before the next Welsh Parliament election in May 2026.
When the law comes into effect, the Valley Stadium in Ystrad Mynanch, Wale's sole dog track, will be forced to cease operations.

Ban Unjustified and Politically Motivated
The GBGB, which oversees greyhound racing, strongly opposes the ban, stating that it was unjustified and not based on evidence. According to the group, the ban was not motivated by welfare concerns but rather by the influence of extreme animal rights activists.
The GBGB also criticized the Welsh government for failing to engage with the industry before making the decision. On May 19, the GBGB announced that it would pursue a judicial review of the ban.
GBGB has always strongly opposed any ban on greyhound racing and continually encouraged policymakers to support robust regulation, which is evidently the most effective way to protect the welfare of racing greyhounds and the integrity and prosperity of the sport going forward. We believe that our claim for judicial review is both strong and justified following the Deputy First Minister of Wales' ministerial statement deciding to introduce a ban on greyhound racing as soon as possible. We are grateful to all those who are supporting this important claim as we strive to secure the future of the sport.
In the judicial review, if the court determines that the ban on greyhound racing in Wales was made without proper authority or justification, it may overturn the decision or impose alternative solutions.
