New Lived Experience Advisory Panel to Advise UKGC

The United Kingdom Gambling Commission has appointed a Lived Experience Advisory Panel to work on player safety. It will be continuing the work of the interim Experts by Experience group and will be providing recommendations to the Commission to help it make informed decisions and improve standards.

The panel met for the first time this week. It is composed of people who have experienced gambling-related harm, including those affected by other people’s gambling, and its overall aim is to collaborate towards making gambling safer.

The panel is set to work with the Commission to advise on a number of policy development initiatives, including providing input for the Gambling Act Review.

The establishment of this group is a great step forward for us in our work in making gambling safer and building our understanding of harm and its impacts. As already proven by the input of the Interim Group, the views and perspectives of Lived Experience in our decision making is invaluable and is already having a positive impact in our work in addressing gambling related harm.

The Gambling Commission’s chair, William Moyes, called the establishment of the group “a positive step towards better understanding harms caused by gambling.” He hopes that it will help them make “faster progress to reduce gambling harms.”

A spokesperson for the panel said that they are pleased that the Commission has taken the step of listening to those who have been harmed by gambling. They went on to say that the group represents “a real opportunity for the voice of those with lived experience to support and influence the work of the Gambling Commission.”

The Lived Experience Advisory Panel is to become another formal group that advises the regulator together with the Advisory Board for Safer Gambling and the Digital Advisory Panel.
