Buenos Aires Politician Rallies Support for Gaming Regulation
Buenos Aires politician Diego R. Garciarena is rallying public support for a bill aimed at combating child gambling addiction and regulating Argentina's online gaming industry.
Apart from being an advocate against online gambling, Garciarena is also a representative of the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR), Radical Civic Union in English, which is also actively calling for stronger regulations and protections to address the expansion of online gambling.
The UCR has a bill in the legislature that seeks to regulate online gaming through the implementation of biometric validation systems and stricter licensing requirements. However, the legislation has been lingering in the legislative process since its introduction at the end of last year.
Garciarena believes the delay of the bill in the Buenos Aires legislature is deliberate, stemming from a lack of political will, and has therefore decided to mobilize public support for his proposed legislation. He has shared an online form on his X page where citizens can express their support for the bill.
To verify that the signatories are Argentine citizens, the form requires individuals to provide their National Identity Document (DNI) number.

In his social media post, Garciarena highlights the urgency of the issue, stating that "online betting is advancing unchecked" and "Our bill aims to prevent childhood gambling addiction." He accompanied the post with a video indicating that gambling addiction is increasingly affecting schools.
According to the Association of Private Schools of Argentina, online gaming operators are exploiting children with ads and free bonuses, leading to addiction without parental awareness.
Garciarena also criticizes Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof and his administration for allegedly turning a blind eye to issues, specifically regarding the regulation of online gaming.
