Connecticut Panel Gives Consent to Sports Betting

State regulations for a new gambling market to launch in Connecticut were approved by a legislative committee on Tuesday. This marks a large step towards legalized sports betting being introduced to residents of the state, alongside online casino gaming and other options.

It is now in the hands of the U.S. Department of Interior to decide if it gives approval on the changes to agreements that are in place between Connecticut and the two tribes that have federal recognition within. Both of them play their own large role in the expansion plan put forth.

Building on many months of work, the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection proceeded forward with submitting the package of proposed rules over to the Regulations Review Committee of the General Assembly. Fortunately, these were fast-tracked through, and both the tribes – the Mashantucket Pequots and Mohegans – as well as the administration led by Governor Ned Lamont, have expressed their desire to legalize sports betting within the state. It is hoped that this can be set up and ready to go when the regular NFL season begins on September 9, with the Dallas Cowboys taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Legislation was passed by the General Assembly earlier on in the year, and Lamont proceeded to sign this into law. Through it, the two tribes and the Connecticut Lottery Corporation were given sole rights to providing both online and offline sports wagering. Tribal casinos can also offer daily fantasy sports under the new law, as well as online casino gaming to Connecticut residents. However, the necessary approvals from the Department of the Interior are still required. The tribes believe that such approval will be granted before the September 9 date, though.

The passage of the regulations for sports wagering and online gaming is a significant step forward for Connecticut and our partners in this new marketplace. In working collaboratively with the Mohegan Tribe, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, and the Connecticut Lottery Corporation, Connecticut has crafted nation-leading legislation, which will position our state as a leader in this space and will provide an elevated user experience for eligible residents.
