Florida Gaming Control Commission Promotes Playwise During Problem Gambling Awareness Month
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Gaming Control Commission is marking Problem Gambling Awareness Month by promoting free and confidential support services across the state.

The state-backed program, Playwise, provides round-the-clock confidential support through its toll-free helpline at 833-PLAYWISE and its online platform at Playwise.org.
Raising Awareness Across Florida
Problem Gambling Awareness Month each March aims to highlight the signs of gambling addiction and ensure those affected know where to turn for help. Officials stress that gambling-related harm is not limited to financial strain. Emotional distress, relationship breakdowns and employment challenges often follow.
FGCC Executive Director Alana Zimmer emphasized the importance of visibility during the awareness campaign.
“Raising awareness is important. We must let people know that resources are available to help them when facing this issue. When individuals understand the warning signs of problem gambling and know where to find vital assistance, we help build a healthier and stronger Florida.

Problem gambling can be difficult to identify, particularly when individuals attempt to conceal behavior from family or friends. According to the FGCC, common warning signs include spending more time or money on gambling than intended, chasing losses, borrowing funds to continue wagering, and experiencing anxiety or irritability when unable to gamble.
Officials encourage early intervention. By recognizing patterns before financial or emotional harm escalates, individuals have a better chance of stabilizing their situation with professional support.
On March 10, Florida will also observe Gambling Disorder Screening Day, a nationwide initiative encouraging individuals to assess their gambling behavior and seek guidance if needed.
24/7 Confidential Support Through Playwise
Playwise operates independently of gaming operators and offers confidential counseling referrals at any time of day. Services are available in English and Spanish, ensuring broader accessibility for Florida residents.
The state funds the program to ensure that cost is not a barrier to assistance. Callers can receive referrals to treatment providers and learn about responsible gaming tools.
For many families, knowing there is a confidential number to call can provide reassurance during moments of crisis.
Legal Gaming and Enforcement in Florida
Alongside promoting support services, the FGCC reiterated that gambling machines are permitted only in licensed facilities. Legal slot machines operate in eight pari-mutuel facilities in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, as well as certain facilities run by the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
Unauthorized gambling remains illegal. The Commission encourages residents to report suspected illegal operations through its online reporting system or tip line.
The FGCC’s broader mission is to preserve the integrity of gaming in Florida through regulation, licensing and enforcement. Officials say responsible gambling initiatives form a key part of that mandate.
As Problem Gambling Awareness Month continues, state leaders hope more Floridians will take advantage of the free resources available. For those facing gambling-related challenges, help remains accessible around the clock – a reminder that recovery begins with a single call.
