One-Third of UK Seniors Gamble Online, New Study Reveals
A recent UK study on gambling patterns has found that people aged 65 and above are increasingly participating in online betting and casino games.
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:According to the Glasgow University report, nearly one-third (30%) of adults aged 65 and older wager on online casino, sports betting, bingo, and lottery.
The study also revealed that seniors are betting more often, with more than half of over-65s admitting to regularly betting on bingo, horse racing, sports events, and online casino games.
The research is backed by new findings of the Gambling Commission, which highlight the growing trend of online gambling among older people.
The data revealed that 39% of survey participants aged 65-74 had gambled online in the past four weeks.
The figures mark a 124% rise compared to the results of a similar report in 2019.

Tying Pension Access to Gambling Support
Experts are now suggesting that UK residents be asked about their gambling habits as part of the process when they gain access to their pension funds.
The proposal is further reinforced by the study’s finding of a notable rise in gambling activity among UK adults over 55, the age when their pension pots become accessible.
UK online casinos and gambling outlets, including lottery and bingo operators, are also urged to display clear warnings and provide signposting to support services like the National Gambling Helpline.
Gambling harms are often associated with younger people, but this research brings attention to the issue faced by retirees. Screening questions and accessible support pathways are measures that could play a role in raising awareness of gambling-related challenges. By exploring these approaches, the industry may be able to better support individuals in making informed financial decisions and improve their financial well-being in later life.
