Online Casino Sector Records Higher GGR than Betting for First Time in Denmark

The Denmark Betting Focus Industry Report compiled by the BtoBet company has revealed some interesting statistics regarding the country’s gambling sector. Primarily, the fact that the GGR for the online casino sector in Denmark has surpassed that of the sports betting industry for the 2020 period. This marks the first time in history that such has been recorded since Denmark partially liberalized its gambling market.

The figures show that the GGR for online casinos hit the DKK 2,453 million mark, giving it a 27% share of the overall market. In comparison, the sports betting sector took a total of DKK 2,290 million for the same 2020 period, standing at a 25% share.

Yet, this shouldn’t be looked into too much, considering what was happening in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic brought a lot of businesses to a halt, including land-based casinos. This forced many people to access online casinos instead of visiting their favored brick-and-mortar establishments. Furthermore, the pandemic incited a heavily reduced sports events calendar, leaving bettors with less to wager on overall.

Even though that was the case, online casinos operating in Denmark didn’t have an easy time of it. Various issues sought to cause havoc, including the social responsibility controls that were introduced in January of 2020. The new rules included an update to the certification process. Through this, daily, weekly, or monthly player deposit limits became compulsory. Further restrictions on sales promotions and in other areas doubtless affected the heights that the online casino GGR could have reached.

The figure of DKK 2,453 million for the country’s online casino GGR in 2020 was only 5% more than the DKK 2,354 that was recorded for the previous year. Many are now waiting to see how the figures for both the casino and sports betting sectors in Denmark measure up in 2021’s report, to be released next year. Of course, a much more normal sports calendar is now in effect once again, meaning that sports betting is likely to have experienced a boost of its own. To put things into a bit more of an understandable light, when sports events returned, the country’s sports betting GGR saw its highest ever monthly level of DKK 303 million in October 2020.
