Sportsbooks Inject Record Revenue into Brazil’s Sports Sector
Licensed sports betting operators in Brazil have transferred a total of BRL 773.9 million($145,532,843) to national sports entities and government bodies in the first six months of 2025.
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:The Ministry of Sport was the primary beneficiary, receiving BRL 478.9 million ($90 million), the highest amount recorded since the market's regulation in late 2023 and implementation in 2024.
Additional transfers include BRL 154.9 million ($29 million) to the National Sports System and BRL 47.5 million($8 million) to the Brazilian Olympic Committee, contributing to the total sports-related disbursements. These funds are intended to bolster athletic programs, infrastructure, and development, fulfilling a legal requirement that ties betting profits back to the sports that fuel the industry.
Betting companies owe a social debt to Brazilian sports, as they have used sports to enter people’s lives and homes. Therefore, this compensation must be appropriate so that we can address the problems arising from betting as a whole.
In the period, operators recorded a combined revenue of BRL 17.4 billion ($3.2 billion). The tax revenue milestone was primarily driven by federal laws, one of which mandated a 12% levy on gross gaming revenue.

Tax Collections and Upcoming Adjustments
Beyond sports allocations, the federal government collected BRL 3.8 billion ($714 million) in gambling-related taxes during the first half of the year.
This revenue stream is expected to grow further as the Senate evaluates proposals for retroactive taxation on gambling firms that operated before full regulation, potentially adding billions more to public coffers.
Furthermore, the government has announced an increase in the operator revenue levy from 12% to 18%, with the extra proceeds designated for sports and social security programs.
According to the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA), which monitors tax inflows from betting operators, distributions are supervised through its platform, and there are ongoing efforts to strengthen compliance and accuracy procedures. This focus on oversight comes alongside the creation of an interministerial group to combat match-fixing, addressing potential risks in the expanding market.
