Veikkaus to Introduce Player Verification for Slots in January 2021

Veikkaus, the Finnish gambling monopoly, has said that it will be implementing compulsory identity verification at land-based slot machines. The feature was originally due to be rolled out at the end of January, but now it has been brought forward and is due to begin on 12 January 2021.

ID verification

The announcement from Veikkaus follows the introduction of the pilot program for account-based play back in September. The new ID verification rules will only apply to devices that are based in third-party locations. Slot arcades operated by Veikkaus will use account-based play that is due to be rolled out in the summer of 2021.

From 12 January, those playing in third-party arcades will be required to log in to play on the slot machines. The use of identity verification will also allow players to self-exclude from games.

Veikkaus has been in the news recently after removing a number of slot machines across Finland. By the end of the year, they will have removed a total of 8,000 machines.

The coronavirus pandemic has also forced the company to close a number of arcades across the country. Jari Heino, the Senior Vice President of Channels and Sales, said, “The authorities have access to the best expertise available as regards the coronavirus pandemic, and we will naturally act in compliance with their instructions.”

The introduction of compulsory identity verification for land slots in the country suggests that there will be further steps taken in regards to compliance and age verification. Therefore, it is important that online operators also ensure that they are in compliance with any regulations.
