Big Name Game Providers Leave Stake.us in California Amid Lawsuit
In California, a bill that would ban sweepstakes casinos, AB 831, has advanced to the Senate. In the meantime, though, the state itself has filed a civil lawsuit and named entities such as Stake.us (a sweepstakes casino) and top game providers like Evolution, Pragmatic Play, and Hacksaw Gaming.

AB 831’s Journey Through the Senate
AB 831 has changed quite a bit since it was first introduced, but it sailed through the various legislative channels.
It was paused briefly once it reached the Senate Appropriations Committee, though. It was placed into a suspense file, a designation that occurs when a bill could have massive financial implications. However, after just a few days, and despite numerous tribes coming out against the bill, it passed unanimously 7-0.
To date, tribes like Big Lagoon Rancheria, Sherwood Valley Band of Pomo Indians, and Kletsel Dehe Wintun Nation have come out against the bill.
After the bill advanced to the Senate, where it needs 21 of 40 votes, various cities with cardrooms came out against the bill.

Other Stake.us Lawsuits
To date, Stake.us has faced other lawsuits in California, but this one is different. The other lawsuits, such as the time plaintiff Dennis Boyle filed one, it was sent to arbitration as the terms of use mention that lawsuits filed by players would go there. However, this lawsuit wasn’t filed by a player, but rather by the state.
Stake.us recently withdrew from Arizona (in July). Their excluded list now includes the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and West Virginia.
