The findings of the APPG will shape the considerations that will inform future gambling regulations in the UK. From now through September 12, the inquiry will collect evidence to support possible reforms to existing rules.

The APPG will hold evidence sessions to explore key issues identified as priorities. These involve a comprehensive review of the UK's current gambling regulations and how they impact other key policy areas, such as public health, financial services, the economy, and taxation.

The inquiry will assess the progress made since the UK Government's White Paper and the suitability of the current legal framework for the digital age. Key proposals in the Act, such as the statutory levy, stake limits, financial risk checks, and the establishment of an industry ombudsman, will be evaluated.

The investigation will cover both online and land-based gambling, with a special focus on examining the viability of the new regulatory proposals for the latter, as outlined in the white paper.

Additionally, the inquiry will assess the performance of the Gambling Commission and other relevant authorities. It will also look into gambling advertising and the effectiveness of current regulations.

The inquiry is launched in response to ongoing concerns about gambling harm and the effectiveness of existing regulatory tools in protecting vulnerable consumers.

New Inquiry to Champion Stronger Reforms

The APPG on Gambling Reform is the most recent cross-party parliamentary group to focus on Britain's gambling sector, following in the footsteps of the APPG on Gambling Related Harm, which MP Carolyn Harris previously led.

The new APPG is being chaired by Conservative MP Sir Iain Duncan Smith, who previously led the APPG's inquiry into the 2023 white paper. The group will consider whether more drastic measures or structural changes are needed, and the possibility of a new Gambling Act to further protect vulnerable individuals.

The previous Government's White Paper marked a step in the right direction by beginning to address some of the challenges posed by today's gambling industry. However, it is clear that much more needs to be done to ensure our regulatory framework is fit for the digital age to protect people from harm. This inquiry will play a crucial role in shaping our recommendations to government, and I strongly encourage organisations and individuals to submit evidence to help inform our work.
