Casino Proposal for New York's Hudson Yards to Include Hyatt as Hotel Operator
Silverstein Properties, Rush Street Gaming, and Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment have announced a partnership with Hyatt Hotels Corporation for their proposed New York City casino project, The Avenir. The development, which is part of a competitive bid for one of the limited casino licenses available in the city, would operate under the Destination by Hyatt brand if selected and approved for construction.

The project would bring a 1,000-room and suite luxury hotel to the Hudson Yards area, strategically positioned near the Javits Center to attract both leisure and business travelers. In addition to the hotel and casino, the proposal includes 100 permanently affordable housing units and a 1,000-seat performance venue.

The Destination by Hyatt branding would allow loyalty program members to earn points during their stay at the property, integrating the facility into Hyatt's global guest rewards system.
Tal Kerret, President of Silverstein Properties, stated that the collaboration with Hyatt will give The Avenir access to a large network of loyal customers and help draw new business to Manhattan's Far West Side. He emphasized the importance of strengthening New York City's capacity to compete internationally for conventions, exhibitions, and major events.
The Avenir enters a crowded field of contenders vying for one of the three downstate casino licenses expected to be awarded. Competing proposals include a Times Square project from SL Green Realty and Caesars Entertainment, a Queens-based bid near Citi Field from New York Mets owner Steve Cohen and Hard Rock International, and a Bronx proposal from Bally's Corporation.

Locals Still Oppose Casinos in New York City
Community opposition has been a recurring theme across several casino proposals, with residents raising issues related to noise, increased traffic, and potential displacement. Despite these challenges, proponents of The Avenir have pointed to its proximity to major commercial centers and tourist attractions as key advantages. Hyatt's presence in the project is seen as a strategic move to attract global travelers seeking immersive, high-end experiences in urban destinations.
Dan Hansen, head of Americas Development at Hyatt, described the project as an important step in Hyatt's expansion strategy, offering travelers a combination of luxury accommodations and entertainment. He stated that the planned development would reinforce Hyatt's commitment to delivering meaningful and authentic experiences in sought-after markets.
The Avenir has secured the support of the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council (HTC), the union representing hotel and casino workers in New York and Northern New Jersey. HTC President Rich Maroko highlighted the proposal's potential to generate approximately 5,000 permanent jobs in the casino and hospitality sectors. He described the project as a significant economic opportunity for both the city and state and welcomed its entry into the competitive bidding process.
If granted the license and development approval, The Avenir also plans to collaborate with Union Square Hospitality HQ on employee training and workforce development. In addition, the developers intend to implement programs in partnership with Hyatt aimed at enhancing job readiness and career growth for local residents.
