The 26-year-old pitcher is one of the five players recently charged and sanctioned for betting on baseball, including Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano, A's pitcher Michael Kelly, Padres pitcher Jay Groome, and Phillies infielder Jose Rodriguez.

According to MLB, Saalfrank allegedly placed 29 bets amounting to $445.87 on sports, with 28 wagers on MLB games, while playing for the Reno Aces in Triple-A. Although he didn't bet on any games he participated in, Saalfrank violated the league's gambling policy, which prohibits players from wagering on any MLB games, regardless of their involvement.

Rookie Debut Followed by Nightmare Season

Saalfrank made his major league debut last September, surrendering two earned runs across 10.2 innings. His rookie campaign featured three World Series appearances, where he spun 2.1 scoreless frames.

However, Saalfrank's fortunes seemed to have taken a turn for the worse this season. After failing to make the Opening Day roster, he was briefly called up in late April. He made a pair of appearances before being swiftly demoted again following his poor performance against the Dodgers, where he surrendered four runs and recorded just a single out.

On top of this, he will now face a one-year suspension from the league, which will sideline him for the remainder of the year and cast a shadow over his future in professional baseball.

Marcano Pays Highest Price

Compared to Tucupita Marcano, Saalfrank and the three other players who got one-year suspensions had it relatively easier.

Marcano has received a lifetime ban for allegedly placing MLB bets, including on Pirates games, while he was a member of the team. According to the league, Marcano placed a total of 387 bets, including 231 wagers related to MLB games from October 2022 to November 2022.

With the penalty, Marcano, 24, becomes the first active player in a century to receive a lifetime ban over betting.
