Famous Poker Player's High-End Yacht Burns at Sea
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:An opulent 88-foot yacht reportedly belonging to a Spanish professional poker player Diego Gomez Gonzalez known as 'The Lion' has caught fire and sunk off the coast of a Mediterranean island.
At the time of the incident, the yacht reportedly carried five crew and 12 passengers on board. All the individuals on board were able to abandon the vessel before the raging inferno took over, ensuring their safety. However, one of the crew members, identified as a 39-year-old Spaniard, sustained minor burns during the process and required medical attention.
How Did It Happen?
An alarm was sounded on the yacht named "Irmao" at 6 pm on Saturday while it was anchored near Es Cavall d'en Borras beach in the Ses Salines Natural Park.
The inferno attracted onlookers who gathered in their boats nearby and observed as the fire engulfed the yacht, emitting dense black smoke into the sky above the distressed vessel. Spanish authorities later released footage of them towing the ablaze yacht.
It was unclear whether the famous gambler was present on the yacht named Irmao during the incident. The identities and nationalities of the people on board have also not been disclosed. The individuals could have been tourists who rented the yacht or guests of the owner.
The luxury yacht, which was built in 1995, offers comfortable accommodation for up to 20 individuals. It boasts amenities like a deck jacuzzi, luxurious cabins, and provisions for a range of water sports. It is stationed on the island of Ibiza and costs over £45,000 to charter during the summer peak season.
Gomez Gonzalez's Poker Journey
Hailing from Madrid, Gonzalez earned his nickname after donning a complete lion costume during the final table of the 2012 European Poker Tour in Prague. The Hendon Mob estimated his live winnings to $500,000.
His top live score was $256,000, secured through a fifth-place finish at the 2012 European Poker Tour (EPT) Prague Main Event. He has also gotten five World Series of Poker (WSOP) online bracelet cashes hosted on GGPoker during 2020 and 2021.
