Four Arrested as Manchester Gambling Raids Seize More than £20,000

MANCHESTER, England – Four people were arrested and more than £20,000 seized during raids on four properties linked to suspected illegal gambling. The operation extends a joint enforcement investigation that began in May, with authorities saying further action may follow.

Greater Manchester Police executed four warrants in Deansgate and Manchester city center on Monday, Sept. 21. The Gambling Commission and Manchester City Council’s Licensing Team supported the operation.

The Gambling Commission said officers recovered mobile phones, gambling tables, records and account books from the properties. More than £20,000 in cash was also seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Four Arrested During Manchester Raids

Two people were arrested on suspicion of immigration offenses. A man was arrested on suspicion of money laundering and breaching the Gambling Act through the alleged provision of gambling facilities without authority, while another man was arrested on suspicion of licensing offenses related to operating a late-night takeaway without a license.

The arrests remain part of an investigation and do not establish guilt. Greater Manchester Police said on Sept. 22 that all four people were in custody following the overnight enforcement activity.

Sue Young, the Gambling Commission’s Executive Director of Operations, said the regulator views illegal gambling as an issue that can extend beyond gambling legislation.

“Unlicensed operators often have links to wider criminal activity, exploit vulnerable people and undermine legitimate regulated businesses. And that is why we are always keen to work in partnership with the police to crack down on illegal operations.”

Raids Follow May Manchester Operation

Police said the latest investigation developed from intelligence obtained during an earlier gambling operation in May, including information recovered from previously seized mobile phones. That operation involved a raid on a suspected illegal gambling den in Manchester city center and resulted in two arrests.

The May action also recovered gambling tables, chips, records, account books, cash and mobile phones. The September operation broadened the investigation to four properties and produced additional evidence that authorities are now examining.

PC Nial Vivian of the Manchester City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team said officers were specifically responding to reports of illegal gambling and premises operating without the required licenses. He said the simultaneous warrants had also produced additional intelligence opportunities.

UK Authorities Continue Illegal Gambling Enforcement

The Manchester investigation comes amid a series of enforcement operations involving the Gambling Commission and local police forces. In August, raids targeting illegal gambling in Sheffield and Doncaster uncovered 16 illegal betting terminals, while cash and gold were also recovered and three people were arrested.

The Commission has increasingly worked alongside police, immigration authorities and local licensing teams when suspected unlicensed gambling overlaps with other potential offenses. Such operations can involve gambling legislation alongside money laundering, immigration or licensing investigations.

Greater Manchester Police said investigators will continue developing the intelligence gathered from the latest raids and take further action where appropriate. No charges arising from the Sept. 21 operation had been announced in the statements released by police and the Gambling Commission.
