The planned Hard Rock Hotel will include between 200 and 225 rooms, luxury suites, a spa, fitness center and a 15,000-square-foot convention center. The project is expected to cost around $90 million.

Expansion Comes as Regional Competition Grows

Casino executives said the project is designed to strengthen Rockford’s position as a regional entertainment destination while helping the property compete with new casino developments in neighboring Wisconsin and across Illinois.

Hard Rock Casino Rockford president Geno Iafrate said the venue must continue expanding as additional gaming projects enter the market, including the large-scale Ho-Chunk Gaming Beloit development roughly 18 miles north of Rockford.

The Beloit project is expected to open its casino operations later this year, with a hotel tower planned for 2027. Iafrate acknowledged the Wisconsin venue could initially reduce Hard Rock’s gaming revenue by around 20%.

Despite the growing competition, Hard Rock executives argued the addition of a hotel was necessary regardless of nearby developments, pointing to increasing demand for destination-style casino properties that combine gaming, entertainment and overnight accommodations.

Hotel to Include Convention and Entertainment Space

The expansion would make the property the only Hard Rock Hotel in Illinois. According to casino officials, the hotel will feature music-themed displays similar to those already used throughout the casino, including memorabilia connected to Rockford native and Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen.

The convention center component is expected to help attract conferences, events and out-of-town visitors, building on a customer base that already draws heavily from outside the immediate region.

Hard Rock executives said more than 60% of visitors currently travel from beyond a 30-mile radius, with Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport positioned as a potential gateway for broader tourism growth.

Illinois Casino Market Continues to Expand

Hard Rock Casino Rockford has become one of Illinois’ busiest casinos since opening its permanent facility in 2024.

According to Illinois Gaming Board figures cited in local reports, the property ranked among the top-performing casinos in the state earlier this year. Statewide casino revenue has also continued rising following the opening of several new land-based gaming venues.

At the same time, multiple large casino developments remain underway across the region, including Bally’s Chicago, Hollywood Casino Aurora and American Place Casino in Waukegan.

Hard Rock expects to break ground on the hotel expansion in 2026, with the opening targeted for late 2027.
