The professional poker player achieved the ultimate triumph on Wednesday night, outlasting a record field of over 10,000 players to secure the prestigious bracelet and a staggering $10 million grand prize.

Tamayo began the final table in a distant seventh and battled his way to the top spot, becoming the first player to ‘ship the tournament’ from the position since Pius Heinz’s epic win in 2011.

Nine players reached the final table on Tuesday. However, after a full day of play, the number of players whittled to three. The next day, Jordan Griff, an amateur player, pulled off a stunning upset, knocking out online poker legend Niklas’ Lena900′ Astedt with a set of nines.

The stage was then set for a showdown between Tamayo and Griff. In the final, decisive hand, Tamayo held an 8-3 offsuit but spiked a two pair on the flop. Griff wielded a 9-6 offsuit but remained in contention with top pair. Tamayo went all-in, and Griff made the hero call. The board ran out an A-5, and Tamayo’s two pair held up, earning him the pot and the championship title.

Everybody who’s great at poker plays this tournament, and I somehow won it and I still can’t believe it. A lot of us start playing it for the money and then when we get good, we start playing it for the prestige. This is both.

Before his latest win, Tamayo had four WSOP circuit titles in his portfolio, and his previous best score was $352832, earned as a 21st-place finish in the 2009 WSOP main event.
