UK Online Slots See Record GGY Growth Despite Stake Limits
The introduction of new stake limits has not done much to stem the growth of online sports gambling, according to new data from the UK Gambling Commission.

Online casino data for Q2 2025, ending June, revealed an increase in gross gambling yield (GGY), despite the implementation of new restrictions.
In the second quarter of the fiscal year (April-June), online gross gaming yield (GGY) reached a staggering £1.49 billion, marking a 2% rise from the same period in 2024. Total bets and spins jumped 6% year-on-year to 26.1 billion, while average monthly active accounts dropped 10% to 12.7 million.
During the period, slots GGY surged 14% to £745 million; meanwhile, real betting GGY and the number of bets dropped by 7% and 16% respectively.
The number of spins rose 8% to 24.4 billion, with average monthly active accounts holding steady at 4.4 million. Online slots sessions exceeding an hour dropped 9% to 8.8 million, and average session length decreased by 1 minute to 16 minutes.
Furthermore, sessions exceeding an hour made up about 5% of the total, a 6% decline from the previous year.
Retail betting operators saw a 5% drop in GGY to £552 million, with bets and spins falling 3% to 3.2 billion.

The stake limits were introduced as part of a series of restrictions on online slots in May. It was set at a maximum of £5 for adults and £2 for players aged 18 to 24.
The limits were introduced to slow down slots activity, but instead, the latest data shows that it has reached record levels in terms of GGY and spin volumes. The limits appear to be achieving their goal of protecting consumers without causing a major downturn in the industry.
While these stats offer valuable insights, the commission noted that these figures aren’t directly comparable to other industry data due to differences in tracking free spins, casino bonuses, and operator averages.
