Mental is a slot from Nolimit City that was released in 2021. The game truly lives up to its developer’s name, transporting players into an asylum where there seems to be no limit to the madness on display. More importantly, the game is absolutely packed with bonus features, and they can deliver payouts of up to 66,666 times the bet, making every spin of the reels truly exciting. Read on our Mental slot review to find out what else is hidden in this game.

An Insane Number of Features

Mental is a 5-reel slot, and the reel alternate between being 3 positions and 2 positions high, which results in a total of 108 ways to win. Wins are formed by landing enough matching symbols from left to right across adjacent reels starting from the leftmost reel.

The Mental slot is packed with features such as split symbols, massive payout multipliers, transforming symbols, and three different free spins modes. Thanks to these features, each spin of the reels has the potential to deliver huge winnings, and all of these features are explained in our review so that you can make the most of every single spin.

A Crazy Theme Brought to the Reels of Mental Slot

The Mental slot game has a horror theme, and the action takes place in an insane asylum, complete with flickering lights and stained walls. The gameplay is accompanied by a chilling soundtrack that truly sets the atmosphere. The theme extends to the slot’s symbols, and they include five different patients, many of them inflicted with some kind of contraption such as a mask or gag, as well as an eye, a brain, a heart, a pair of lungs, and a skeleton hand. The wild symbol is a skull, and there are scorpion and spider scatter symbols.

The overall effect means that this is not a slot for the faint-hearted, and this is furthered by some creepy animations that bring the symbols to life when high-value wins are formed on the reels of the Mental slot machine. However, if you don’t mind being a bit scared as you play, then there is no denying the quality of this slot’s design.

How to Play Mental Slot and Not Go Insane

The Mental online slot is an easy game to start playing once you get used to the many features and bonuses you can encounter. All you need to do is set your bet using the controls to the left of the reel and then click on the spin button to set them in motion. There is autoplay functionality that will allow you to set up to 1000 spins going complete with stop conditions, such as if your balance drops or increases by a certain amount. Those who want to speed up the game can use the lightning bolt button to decrease the spin time.

The slot’s features are triggered in a variety of different ways. Some by landing enough of a certain scatter symbol, others by accumulating enough of a specific symbol, and others at random. All of these features are explained in greater detail in the next section.

Mental Bonus Features

There are a vast number of bonus features crammed into the Mental slot online, each of which works in a slightly different way.

On each spin, up to 13 reel positions may be engulfed in flames. This is known as the Fire Frames feature. The positions then split to display two symbols instead of one, which makes it slightly easier to land winning combinations.

When at least two of the Dead Patient symbols land, the Dead Patient feature is triggered. One of those symbols will then reveal a multiplier of x5, x10, x15, x30, x50, x100, x200, x500, x1000, or an incredible x9,999.

At the bottom of reels, two and four are positions known as Enhancer Cells. The Enhancer Cells are activated if you land four or six Fire Frames on reels two or four, respectively. Each of the Enhance Cells then reveals one of the following:

  • 1 of the 5 Patient symbols
  • The Dead Patient symbol
  • A regular wild symbol
  • xWays – This reveals three matching symbols (except Scorpion, Spider, or Dead Patient) and expands the reel’s height
  • xSplit – This splits a symbol on each reel into two and then turns them into wilds
  • xNudge Wild – This nudges a wild symbol until it fills the reel, and for each step, it nudges it increases the payout multiplier by +1. If there is more than one xNudge wild, then the value of the multipliers is added together.

The Mental Transform feature begins when the spider symbol lands on reels 2 or 4. The symbol then transforms into an xWays, xSplit, Dead Patient, Wild, or Patient symbol.

The Autopsy Free Spins begin when three scorpion symbols land simultaneously. You start with 8 free spins, and each scorpion in a Fire Frame adds another spin. During the feature, up to five Fire Frames are added on each spin, and once activated, they remain in place for the remainder of the round.

The Lobotomy Free Spins begin when three scorpions and a spider land simultaneously. You begin with 9 free spins and 1 extra for any Fire Frame triggers. The features are active from the Autopsy Free Spin, while the spider symbol triggers the Mental Transform feature for each spin and turns sticky. The spins also come with the Dead Multiplier. The multipliers from Dead Patient symbols are collected and then applied to the respective patient symbols when they land.

Finally, the Mental Free Spins are triggered by landing 3 scorpions and 2 spiders simultaneously. You then get to play 10 free spins. In addition to all the features from the Lobotomy Free Spins, both spider symbols are sticky and trigger the Mental Transform extras. Furthermore, dead multipliers do not decrease when they transfer to a patient, and they can keep increasing as new Dead Patient symbols land.

In jurisdictions where it is allowed, players have the option to buy free spins as follows:

  • Autopsy Free Spins (8-11 free spins) – 80x stake
  • Lobotomy Free Spins (9-13 free spins) – 230x stake
  • Mental Free Spins (10-15 free spins) – 1,000x stake
  • Lucky Dip (1 of the 3 features above) – 232x stake.

Our Tips

Mental is a high volatility slot. In fact, the developer describes it as an extremely high volatility slot. This means that you are likely to have to play many spins before you start to see a return. Therefore, be sure to make sure you are not betting a large amount per spin so that you don’t run out of funds too quickly.

If you enjoy slots with a terrifying theme, then you should check out some of Nolimit City’s other games. Titles such as Das xBoot, X-Ways Hoarder xSplit, and Book of Shadows are all sure to delight and scare you in equal measure. If you would like to explore a slightly different but still terrifying theme, you can try the Wolf Hunters slot from Yggdrasil.

However, it is certainly worth the effort. Each spin of the reels is packed with excitement, and the game delivers a highly engaging and enjoyable experience. Furthermore, with a massive 66,666x up for grabs, you’d have to be mental not to give this game a try.
