The ANJ has launched a new prevention campaign to mitigate the risk of sports betting and gambling addiction and promote responsible wagering practices nationwide, especially during football competitions.

According to the ANJ, the tournament could generate nearly €1 billion (£851.4m/ $1.1bn) in bets in France, surpassing the €900 million wagered during the 2022 World Cup, where France finished as runners-up. The projected figure represents a significant increase from the €700 million bet during the 2021 European Championships.

However, the regulator noted that the actual stake amount will depend on France's performance in the competition, given its status as one of the top contenders.

55% of French Public Will Follow Euro 2024

In preparation for the tournament, the ANJ commissioned an online survey to gauge the French Public's betting intentions. The study, which had 1,070 respondents, revealed that 55% of the French population plans to follow Euro football matches. Notably, a significant 35% of this group plans to place a bet on these games. The figure increased to 44% among respondents aged 18-34.

Furthermore, 82% of respondents acknowledged the risks of addiction associated with betting, which highlights the importance of raising awareness about addiction risks, particularly among younger adults.

Campaign Objectives and Strategy

With the proactive campaign, the ANJ aims to educate the public about the dangers of betting addiction and its far-reaching consequences. The messages use a bold yellow banner to highlight the risks of addiction and share real stories of individuals affected by gambling.

The campaign will also direct individuals to the Evalujeu website to access their gambling habits and receive guidance and support.

The media strategy includes digital displays, social media ads on Snapchat, radio spots, an event publication in So Foot magazine, and video testimonials from players.

The ANJ wishes to make an impact with its campaign which aims to make people understand that legal notices on advertisements are not only a legal obligation but that they contain stories of players’ lives, testimonials on the risks linked to excessive gambling such as those we receive every day at the ANJ.
