Chinese Lottery’s October Sales at an Eight Month Low
In October, China’s lottery sales reached CNY47.34 billion, a 59.3% increase compared to the previous year.
This amount, however, represented the lowest figure in eight months. Compared to last October’s CNY29.72 billion, this year’s figure shows a significant improvement. Nonetheless, it indicated a 10.3% decrease from September’s CNY52.77 billion, indicating a downward trend. Notably, this was the lowest monthly total since February, when sales were CNY41.83 billion.

Breakdown of Lottery Performance
Analyzing the specifics, sports lottery sales in October soared by 70.1% year-on-year, reaching CNY31.85 billion. In addition, welfare lottery sales experienced a 40.9% increase, contributing CNY15.49 billion.
Within the lottery types, betting games continued to dominate, with sales topping CNY32.23 billion. These games alone brought in CNY18.98 billion, a 67.4% rise. Digital lottery sales also saw a 15.0% increase to CNY13.70 billion.
Instant lottery sales showed the most significant growth, skyrocketing by 167.6% year-on-year to CNY11.44 billion in October. Additionally, keno games sales ascended by 47.1% to CNY3.22 billion, while video lottery sales grew by 8.0%, reaching CNY90,000.
Strong Year-to-Date Performance
Looking at the broader picture, total lottery sales from January to October amounted to CNY475.88 billion, a 53.0% increase from the same period in 2022.
Sports lottery took the lead, amassing CNY315.85 billion, up 68.2% from the previous year. Welfare lottery sales also climbed by 29.9%, totaling CNY160.03 billion. In terms of game types, betting games generated the highest sales, reaching CNY203.92 billion, marking a 90.8% increase and accounting for 42.8% of China’s total lottery sales. Digital lottery sales rose by 12.2% to CNY143.45 billion, and instant lottery sales surged by 87.8% to CNY98.23 billion.
Additionally, keno sales increased by 12.2% to CNY30.38 billion, and video lottery sales amounted to CNY1.3 million. Consistent with the October trend, all provinces in China reported year-on-year growth in lottery sales.
