Crown Resorts to Start Gaming Operations at Barangaroo Casino
The Australian press is reporting that the gaming floor at Crown Resorts’ Sydney casino will be officially opening on Monday, 8 August 2022.
The casino, located in Barangaroo, is to open a gaming floor called ‘Crystal Room’. The announcement came a month after the New South Wales Liquor & Gaming Authority approved the casino’s operations. A second floor will open at a later date, and between them, they will house 160 gaming tables and 70 electronic table games.
The two floors were initially due to open in December 2020. However, the NSW gambling watchdog prevented the AU$2.2 billion resort from opening after an inquiry found that Crown had been facilitating money laundering. An additional independent inquiry carried out in 2021 concluded that Crown was unsuitable to hold an NSW casino license and that an overhaul of its management was required.
Since then, the US private equity firm Blackstone has purchased Crown, and the board has been largely replaced. As such, last month Crown was granted a conditional license by the NSW authorities to operate the Barangaroo casino.
The opening of our gaming operations at Crown Sydney is a defining moment for Crown, and the culmination of months of hard work from our dedicated team. The entire team at Crown Sydney has been preparing for this moment for a long time, and we felt the symbolism of the 08.08 date represented ideal timing to open our doors.
The operator also released a statement that committed to providing a “safe and responsible gaming environment”. It explained that the new gaming floor was designed to comply with the “highest levels of governance and compliance”. The statement also claimed that the Barangaroo venue is the only casino of its kind in the country “with all patrons required to be a member or guest of a member and undergo comprehensive checks.”
