Metropolitan Police officers carried out a joint operation with the National Crime Agency and Immigration Enforcement in Haringey on October 23, arresting eight people.

LONDON, England – Eight people were arrested after police targeted businesses suspected of illegal gambling along Green Lanes in Haringey on October 23, 2026. The operation involved multiple law enforcement agencies and followed complaints from residents and local businesses about suspected criminal activity and antisocial behavior.

Metropolitan Police officers led the enforcement action, supported by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Immigration Enforcement. Authorities confirmed that investigations remain ongoing, with the exact offenses under investigation yet to be publicly detailed.

Eight Arrested in Green Lanes Illegal Gambling Operation

Officers targeted commercial premises along Green Lanes suspected of conducting unauthorized gambling activities.

The coordinated operation involved officers from the force’s North Area policing teams, working alongside national agencies responsible for investigating organized crime and immigration-related offenses.

Eight individuals were arrested on suspicion of various offenses. However, police have not publicly identified those detained or specified which alleged offenses relate directly to illegal gambling.

Authorities have also not disclosed the number of premises searched or confirmed whether gambling equipment, cash or other evidence was seized. No criminal charges were announced in the initial police statement.

Inspector Asad Ikram, who issued the Metropolitan Police announcement, said the operation reflected the force’s commitment to tackling organized criminality and addressing concerns raised by local communities. He added that officers would continue using intelligence-led investigations and cooperation with partner agencies to disrupt suspected criminal activity across north London.

Haringey Residents Raised Concerns About Criminal Activity

Police said the raids followed numerous complaints from residents and businesses concerning suspected criminal conduct and antisocial behavior associated with locations along Green Lanes.

The busy commercial street is home to restaurants, cafes and retail businesses, with local policing teams responding to concerns about activities taking place within certain premises.

The operation also comes amid wider discussions about gambling-related harm in Haringey. During an October 1 council scrutiny meeting, local public health officials reported that approximately 3.5% of borough residents were estimated to be at high risk of gambling-related harm, based on the Problem Gambling Severity Index.

Haringey’s director of public health, Will Maimaris, also highlighted the concentration of licensed gambling establishments in less affluent neighborhoods. Of the borough’s 63 gambling premises, 55 were situated in its eastern areas, according to figures presented to councillors.

Those figures concern the distribution of licensed gambling businesses and estimates of gambling-related harm. They do not establish any connection between licensed venues and the suspected illegal operations investigated on October 23.

Latest London Raids Follow Wider UK Gambling Enforcement

The Green Lanes arrests follow several enforcement operations targeting suspected illegal gambling businesses in England during 2026.

In September, police arrested four people in Manchester after searching four properties suspected of involvement in unauthorized gambling. Officers seized more than £20,000 in cash alongside mobile phones, gambling tables and financial records.

Earlier in August, coordinated raids in Sheffield and Doncaster uncovered 16 illegal betting terminals, with three people arrested and cash and gold recovered. Those operations involved cooperation between police, the UK Gambling Commission and other enforcement agencies.

The UK Gambling Commission has warned that unlicensed gambling businesses operate outside the consumer protection and regulatory requirements imposed on legitimate operators, potentially exposing customers to gambling-related harm and wider criminal activity.

However, the Metropolitan Police has not indicated that the Gambling Commission directly participated in the October 23 Haringey operation.

Investigations into the eight arrests remain active. Police have encouraged anyone with information about suspected illegal gambling or related criminal activity to contact the force on 101 or provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers.
