The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has recently announced a new partnership with betting service provider Spring Media. Interestingly, this new partnership is being met with skepticism within the sports community.

However, the FIH had come out to defend its position, stating that its deal with the Sweden-based company would lead to the generation of additional funds for the development of the sport. The FIH also asserted that legal betting is a progressive step in the world of sports.

FIH’s deal with Spring Media covers a betting package that involves all events in the federation, comprising over 1,300 matches over four years.

Integrity Assurance

Commenting on the development, a top FIH official at the Women’s Olympic Qualifier stated that the partnership adheres to legal and gaming regulations, ensuring integrity.

The official highlighted the FIH's longstanding integrity code and the presence of an integrity unit, which proves the body’s commitment to maintaining ethical standards among hockey members.

They also confirmed that the partnership has commenced and that it is a medium to “develop the sport and make way for some financial resources.”

India Dominance

Additionally, The FIH representative stressed that despite the sport expanding globally, India will maintain its significance. Over the past decade, the Indian gambling market has consistently been the leading place for sponsorships and financial gains for the FIH.

He stated: “India is very important for us. In India the history of the game is unique. You are a huge market in terms of population and visibility. Clearly for us India is like a partner. It’s very clear that we will continue to come regularly to India and we will definitely organise other events.”
