Jontay Porter allegedly wagered on NBA matches and gave confidential information to sport bettors.

According to the NBA, Porter placed bets at least 13 times on NBA games through an associate's online betting account while journeying with the Raptors or their development league team from January to March of this year. On one occasion, he wagered against the Raptors, but the team won the game.

However, the league stated that Porter did not play in any of the games he staked on.

With the development, Porter becomes the first athlete to receive a lifetime ban from a major North American league since single-event sports gambling was legalized in the United States in 2018 and in Canada in 2021.

$80,000 Prop Bet Scandal

The 24-year-old joined the Raptors midway through the season and has already played 26 games for the team, five of which he started before he was suspended for betting claims last month.

It was alleged that an $80,000 bet was placed on him not making fewer than two three-point baskets during the Raptor’s game on March 20 against the Sacramento Kings.

He played for less than three minutes and missed a field goal attempt without any three-point shots before voluntarily withdrawing from the lineup, citing illness.

More Regulation News

The size of the prop bet raised suspicions due to the fact that Porter was a low-visibility player, unlikely to attract that much betting action. The undisclosed sportsbook canceled the wager, which would have returned over $1.1 million. Subsequently, licensed sports betting operators and an organization that monitors legal betting markets reportedly brought the attention of the NBA to the bet.

Porter’s partial-season contract with the Raptors was worth about $400,000. If he hadn’t been involved in betting breaches, he would have qualified for a contract next season worth around US$2.1 million.

The Raptors are fully supportive of the league’s decision to ban Jontay Porter from the NBA and are grateful for the swift resolution to this investigation. We will continue to cooperate with all ongoing inquiries.
