Norsk Tipping Implements Monthly Loss Threshold for Under-20s
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:Norsk Tipping has announced its decision to subject consumers under the age of 20 to additional loss limit restrictions.
In its press release, the state-owned gambling monopoly stated that starting from
June 1 under-20s on its platform will face a maximum loss limit of NOK2,000 ($181) per month.
The company already has a NOK20,000 monthly mandatory loss limit on all customers across all games. However, it has now decided to lower the amount for younger players.
The operator cites the group’s life situation and increased risk of harm as the reasons for its new policy. According to the company, people in the age bracket are either studying, in an apprenticeship, or have low incomes.
Furthermore, the company stated that the current number of under-20s on its site is approximately 30,000 players. Of this number, 2,000 have lost more than the proposed NOK2,000 monthly loss limit one or more times over the last year.
It is well documented that younger players are more vulnerable to developing gambling problems. Statistics from both the University of Bergen and the helpline for gambling addicts show that the incidence of gambling problems is higher among younger players than in other age groups. Norsk Tipping’s main purpose is to prevent gambling problems,” she said. “In comparison, the alcohol law also differentiates between age groups over and under 20.
Norsk Tipping's Previous Gambling Limits
In the past, Norsk Tipping has had different limits for different verticals and games on its platform. In 2022, Norwegian regulator Lotteri-og Stiftelsestilsynet asked the operator to reduce its number of casino games and introduce loss limits for sports betting.
A year earlier, Norsk Tipping announced that it had further reduced the maximum monthly limit on its high-risk online games to NOK5,000 ($575).
However, these limits have been replaced by the operator’s current monthly limit of NOK20,000 for all customers and games on its platform.
