1.2M Sports Betting Accounts Registered in New York

Data published by GeoComply shows that more than one million sports betting accounts have been registered in New York just a week after it launched in the state.

Between the launch on 8 January 2022 and 17 January, 1.2 million active accounts were created with the five sportsbooks licensed in the state from a total of 878,000 unique players, which is more than New Jersey and Pennsylvania combined over the same period.

Only 9% of New York sports bettors have placed bets in the past in New Jersey, while 88% of New York bettors are completely new to regulated online sports betting. Furthermore, the data also shows that New Yorkers are generally loyal to one sportsbook with an average of 1.36 accounts per player.

Furthermore, in good news for New Jersey, the data also shows that there was an average of 12.6 million geolocations transactions on the two weekends before the launch in New York and 13.1 million on the two weekends since the launch.

The momentum of New York's sports betting launch has continued, and it is mostly home-grown. The vast majority of users are brand new to regulated sports betting in the US. The data tell us that New Yorkers are dumping illegal sportsbooks for the new legal options, and operators are also excelling at attracting first-time bettors. New York hasn't failed to dazzle us, but we are also impressed by the sustained growth of the overall sports betting industry. We can't wait to share how many more GeoComply data records are broken from now through the Super Bowl.
