Buenos Aires Tackles Underage Gambling with New Campaign
Buenos Aires has unveiled a new campaign to shield minors from gambling advertising.
The campaign featuring the slogan “Placing a bet doesn’t pay off” will target youths across all popular communication channels, with a special focus on social media, where high school students spend an average of five hours daily on their mobile devices.
We are articulating actions to expose a problem that is widespread: the large number of hours that we are exposed to, and above all young people, to screens and games with betting. We believe that it is time to take care, prevention measures. Measures are being taken in the two chambers of the legislature. At the same time, this campaign proposes that it does not give the question of betting. Also from Health, it generates a set of care policies.

Since May, efforts have been underway to implement tougher regulations on gambling promotions to minors under the age of 18. Drafted by municipal deputies Paola Michielotto and Sergio Siciliano, the proposal was prompted by an increase in concerns regarding the escalating promotion of gambling to youths in Buenos Aires.
The issue reached a boiling point in the City of Buenos Aires, which led to the Chief of Government, Jorge Macri, temporarily shutting down the city’s gambling license registry in June. This move, according to the government, will allow it to scrutinize the age verification procedures of all registered companies.
However, the license suspension remains in place, and there is no official word on when it will be lifted.
