Flamengo Coach Speaks Against Sports Betting Sponsorships
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:
The former Brazil and Flamengo player made the remarks in a press conference on Wednesday, where he questioned whether these sponsorships align with the sport’s values and traditions.
Luis noted that 18 of 20 Brazilian Championship clubs feature betting logos on their jerseys, similar to the pervasive tobacco sponsorships in Formula 1 in the 1980s and 1990s.
According to Luis, the increasing influence of betting sponsorships means players are under more betting outcome-related pressures, which can negatively affect their on-field performance and mental health.
Luis warned that the sport’s reputation is on the line as young athletes are constantly exposed to ads that normalize betting. He pointed out that the substantial financial benefits of betting sponsorships could lead to ethical conflicts for clubs that prioritize youth development and community engagement.
Luis revealed that he had rejected several lucrative deals from betting companies due to the potential damage gambling can do to individuals and communities. He envisioned a future where clubs break free from betting platform sponsorships, much like the decline of cigarette sponsorships in sports.
Furthermore, Luis shared a personal anecdote about receiving messages accusing him of affecting betting outcomes with his performance on the field.

The football manager’s comments coincide with a recent betting scandal involving Bruno Henrique, a Flamengo player, who has been charged with match-fixing and fraud in a 2023 match.
Investigators believed Henrique colluded with his brother to get a yellow card in the game, an outcome that constituted 98% of the total wagers on the event.
Commenting on the matter, Luis stated that Flamengo has a player education program that began around 2015, through which the club informs its players about the risks of sports betting.
Luis also stressed the importance of respecting his player’s presumption of innocence and reassured fans that Bruno is managing the situation positively.
