Record Volume of Calls to National Gambling Helpline

This announcement comes as GamCare has experienced a surge in demand for its National Gambling Helpline, which received an unprecedented 53,000 calls over the past year. Nearly half (45%) of these calls cited problems with online slot games, up significantly from 34% in 2020-2021.

At GamCare, our priority is making sure that people who need support for gambling harms receive it as quickly and effectively as possible. With a record 55,000 people calling the National Gambling Helpline last year alone, now is the right time for this important clarity on the future system.

The government has also introduced new bet limits for online slot games, and GamCare has also praised the new measures and said that they are key to reducing future gambling-related harm.

Pandemic Blamed for Increase in Problem Gambling

GamCare has said that the increased demand for its services is due to an increased reliance on online gambling during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The statutory levy is a major step in the UK Government’s efforts to reform gambling laws and reduce the negative impact of gambling on individuals and communities.

In addition to these legislative changes, GamCare recently ended its Safer Gambling Standard certification program following a strategic review. However, services such as the National Gambling Helpline will remain fully operational.
