National Lottery Funding Aids Wardown Park’s Lake Facelift
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:Wardown Park in Luton, a Grade II-listed landscape owned by Luton Borough Council, is set to become the latest beneficiary of the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The park will receive a £250,000 grant from the National Lottery to restore and repair the main structure of its lake and enhance diversity.
Opened in 1904, Wardown Park has been a focal point for leisure activities in Luton. The boathouse, built in the early 20th century, adds charm to the park and has served different purposes over the years, from housing boats to hosting events.
Visitors can enjoy boat rentals, taking a leisurely row or pedal boat ride on the lake. The surrounding parkland includes walking paths, gardens, and play areas.

Focus on Sustainability
According to the council, the initiative aims to preserve the Grade II-listed landscape of Wardown Park and its cultural and historical importance. The project includes the introduction of new plantings and wetland habitats, as well as the improvement of the boathouse.
The council also stated that the plan will focus on natural management and sustainability by considering the “River Lea watercourse and catchment that feeds it.”
The funding will also play a crucial role in advancing the council's plans to apply for a full Heritage Fund grant, potentially amounting to £2.5 million.

Established in 1994, the National Lottery Heritage Fund is mainly responsible for distributing funds raised by the National Lottery in the UK to support projects focused on preserving and promoting the nation's heritage.
The fund has played a significant role in financing a wide range of initiatives, including the restoration of historic buildings, conservation of natural landscapes, and community-based heritage projects.
