Wardown Park in Luton, a Grade II-listed landscape owned by Luton Borough Council, is set to become the latest beneficiary of the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The park will receive a £250,000 grant from the National Lottery to restore and repair the main structure of its lake and enhance diversity.

Opened in 1904, Wardown Park has been a focal point for leisure activities in Luton. The boathouse, built in the early 20th century, adds charm to the park and has served different purposes over the years, from housing boats to hosting events.

Visitors can enjoy boat rentals, taking a leisurely row or pedal boat ride on the lake. The surrounding parkland includes walking paths, gardens, and play areas.

Focus on Sustainability

According to the council, the initiative aims to preserve the Grade II-listed landscape of Wardown Park and its cultural and historical importance. The project includes the introduction of new plantings and wetland habitats, as well as the improvement of the boathouse.

The council also stated that the plan will focus on natural management and sustainability by considering the “River Lea watercourse and catchment that feeds it.”

The funding will also play a crucial role in advancing the council's plans to apply for a full Heritage Fund grant, potentially amounting to £2.5 million.

Wardown is one of our most loved parks. It has served the community for over 100 years, and we hope the engagement program will encourage even more visitors. I could not be more pleased that we are able to restore the lake and preserve this heritage landscape.
