OJK Collaboration to Block 4,000 Online Gambling Accounts
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:OJK, the Financial Services Authority of Jakarta, has announced that over 4,000 online gambling accounts have been closed in recent months.
The regulatory authorities in the region have spent three months blocking the accounts of the gaming company’s customers in a bid to protect the public from the harms of problem gambling.
This is just one measure taken by the government, who have stated they want to eradicate people in the region from partaking in online gaming. The government outlined that it believed many members of the public borrowed money to gamble and had a program to educate people on the dangers of gambling.
In the past three months, we have ordered banks to block more than four thousand online gambling accounts. In certain situations, banks can temporarily suspend transactions and block accounts if there is an order from law enforcement officials as well as relevant authorities, including OJK.
Government and Banks Collaborate to Reduce Online Gambling
The OJK has provided the banking industry in the region with training and guidance on the gambling industry. The banks have a range of tools that they use to identify accounts that are being used for online gambling and the ability to monitor any unusual transactions.
The government has indicated that the assistance the banks have provided in blocking online gambling accounts shows the level of commitment the financial banking institutions are taking to provide a safe environment for the general public.

The banks use customer profiles and patterns of behavior that highlight accounts being used for gambling and have the power to report suspicious activities to the Financial Transaction Reporting and Analysis Center (PPATK).
Once accounts have been identified as being used for the purpose of online gambling, the OJK liaises with the Communication and Informatics Ministry, which has the technology to block the specified accounts.
