In a recent Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) meeting, two significant decisions were made regarding the state's casino landscape. Hollywood Casino Morgantown secured approval to decrease its slot machine offerings. Concurrently, the Lady Luck Nemacolin casino disclosed plans to revamp its gaming area in association with its parent company, Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI).

Hollywood Casino Morgantown to Reduce Slot Offerings

Hollywood Casino Morgantown, represented by General Manager Marc Guastella and attorney Michael Fabius, detailed their plan to the PGCB. They aim to remove 30 slot machines from the gaming porch, thus reducing the total from 147 to 117. This decision was driven by these machines' lower performance, registering nearly 75% less in WPUPD compared to other slots on the floor.

Since its inauguration in December 2021, the casino has twice reduced its slot numbers, leading to surges in slot tax revenues. After eliminating 17 slots in January 2022, revenue increased by about $400,000. A subsequent reduction of 14 slots in December 2022 witnessed a $1 million boost by March 2023. Despite the reductions, Guastella remains upbeat, pointing to steady yearly revenue growth.

Post these modifications, the casino will house 697 slots. Fabius assured a rapid transition and indicated that the casino is contemplating non-gaming ventures for the vacated areas, guaranteeing no staff cuts.

Lady Luck Nemacolin's Slot Lineup Refresh

During the PGCB meeting, Michael Fabius and General Manager John Gibboni outlined Lady Luck Nemacolin's upcoming shifts. The casino is set to deploy 81 new slot units, while retiring 100 older ones linked to CDI. This net reduction of 19 machines underscores the casino's commitment to updating its offerings, reversing the inertia observed under previous leadership.

Operating consistently since its license renewal in June, Lady Luck Nemacolin is eyeing several refurbishments. The new slots resonate with their goal of modernizing the gaming floor. Gibboni even alluded to potential slot additions after the redesign.

Beyond gaming, Lady Luck Nemacolin plans to introduce a coffee bar and an entertainment section. These strategic shifts will remain neutral concerning employment. A prevalent industry sentiment suggests slot machine optimization may indeed prove lucrative. The results of these strategies in both casinos will be closely monitored.
