Senator’s Shane Pinto Receives 41-Game Ban for Sports Betting

The NHL has suspended Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto for 41 games due to his involvement in sports wagering activities.

This development marks the first time in history that the NHL will suspend an athlete for sports gambling.

Pinto's actions were regarded as a breach of Exhibit 14.2 in the NHL's collective bargaining agreement, which outrightly forbids any form of gambling on NHL games. Interestingly, this is the only part where gambling is addressed within the NHL's extensive 540-page collective bargaining agreement with the NHL Players' Association.

Nevertheless, the agreement grants Commissioner Gary Bettman the authority to take disciplinary action against players for off-ice conduct.

The NHL confirmed that there was no evidence of Shane Pinto placing bets on NHL games and considers the matter closed unless new information emerges.

Pinto is not among the most popular athletes in the USA and is currently an unsigned restricted free agent and has not yet played a game for the Senators this season. However, despite his absence from the ice, he had been training on his own in Ottawa earlier this month while awaiting a new contract.

The Franklin Square N.Y., native was selected by Ottawa in the second round of the 2019 draft. He had 20 goals and 35 points in his debut full NHL season in 2022-23. Pinto spent two seasons at the University of North Dakota and has 21 goals and 22 assists for 43 points in 99 career games with the Senators.

Following the suspension, Pinto may now sign his qualifying offer of $874,125 to prevent missing the entire 2023-24 season. Being an RFA, he was required to be under contract by December 1st to be eligible for the upcoming season.

I want to apologize to the National Hockey League, the Ottawa Senators, my teammates, the fans and city of Ottawa and most importantly my family. I take full responsibility for my actions and look forward to getting back on the ice with my team.
