YouGov Poll Finds Majority Support Gambling Shirt Sponsor Ban

A survey conducted by YouGov has found that just over three-quarters (77%) of UK football fans are in favor of a ban on gambling operators being shirt sponsors.

The survey was carried out as Premier League clubs announced that from the 2026-27 season onwards, there will be a ban on gambling companies being match-day front-of-shirt sponsors. The ban was agreed to voluntarily and it does not prevent gambling operators from appearing as shirtsleeve or pitch-side sponsors.

The move was welcomed by James Grimes, founder of The Big Step, an organization dedicated to reducing the influence of gambling on football. However, he criticized the lack of an outright ban.

The government and the sport itself now need to wake up to the reality that gambling ads are unhealthy, unpopular and will be kicked out of football. Delaying that moment is risking the health and lives of another generation of young fans.

The YouGov Poll found that more than half of respondents (56%) supported extending the ban to pitch-side displays and to the naming rights of leagues and cup tournaments. There was slightly less support (42%) for a total ban on gambling firms appearing on shirts. The survey polled a total 1000 supporters of teams ranging from the Premier League to League Two.
