Dutch Gambling Sector Surpasses a Million Active Accounts
Newly published figures from the Dutch gambling regulator, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), show that while the market did experience a slowdown in 2023, the number of active accounts surpassed one million for the first time.
LISTEN TO THIS ARTICLE:Furthermore, in the KSA’s sixth monitoring report of the Dutch online gambling market, it reported gross gaming revenue (BSR) of €1.39 billion for the year to 31 December 2023, an increase of 28% from 2022. However, in the second half of 2023, the BSR increased by just 1% compared to the first half of the year.
Young Adults Overrepresented in Gambling Sector
There were 1.1 million active accounts in 2023, an increase of 13% from 2022. The KSA has estimated that roughly one-third of the accounts are used by a total of 448,000 players each month. During the second half of 2023, there were 726,000 players registered with licensed operators, which is equivalent to about 5% of the country’s population.
The report estimated that on average, players lost €958 in the second half of 2023. The KSA also warned that young adults, those aged 18 to 23, own 22% of gambling accounts but make up just 9.5% of the population.

Advertising Ban Deters Potential Gamblers
The monitoring report, which was the first published since the ban on untargeted advertising was introduced in July 2023, also looked at channelization and advertising. It found that an impressive 90% of players are only gambling at licensed websites.
The report found that the targeted advertising ban has not affected current players but it may deter potential players.
The report shows that the market has not experienced any noticeable contraction since the ban. However, the number of visits to gambling websites by people who are not players has decreased significantly. People who already played do not come less often, so the advertising ban mainly affects people who do not yet play.
