Entain Has Been Fined by ACMA for Taking Non-Licensed LIV Golf Bets

Entain, the giant gaming operator, has been fined by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), the gambling regulatory body in Australia, for taking bets contrary to its license.

The Breach of the rules occurred during the last day of the Bangkok LIV Golf tournament, where customers were able to place a total of 78 bets during the course of the golf tournament. The ACMA has rules in place to prevent this in order to protect vulnerable gamblers.

In its defense, Entain explained that over dozens of wagers on hundreds of sporting events each week for this one event, the operator had set the wrong start date. This led to punters on its Ladbrokes site being able to place wagers in play, which is contrary to betting laws in the jurisdiction of Australia.

While the fine was a relatively small amount of AU$13,320 for one of the largest gaming and entertainment companies in the industry, it should be noted that this was the maximum fine the ACMA was allowed to give to Entain.

This fine follows a hefty £17 million fine levied by regulators United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC) last year for operation failures. While this fine is a lot smaller, it shows an increasing willingness by regulators throughout the industry worldwide to charge gaming operators who break local gaming rules.

Online in-play betting increases the risk for those people experiencing gambling harm as it provides fast outcomes and allows for a higher frequency of bets. Entain is a highly experienced wagering operator, and it is disappointing that it did not have internal procedures in place to prevent or detect the error, The ACMA made it clear to the industry last year that they must have robust systems in place to ensure online in-play bets are not made available or accepted.
