Gambling Report Highlights Need for On-Island Support in Jersey

The report said that a platform that offers support and help for individuals with a gambling addiction issue is now urgently needed on the island.
Previously there was a Gambling Therapy service provided by the Jersey authorities, however, this platform was discontinued and has left the island with no dedicated gambling-related harm treatment services.
Last year the JGC was in talks with several providers based in the UK that were contemplating opening a treatment center in Jersey for individuals with gambling problems. Ultimately both parties were unable to reach an agreement.
Last year, the Commission came within days of signing a contract with a major overseas treatment specialist to establish a service, when the other party undertook a strategic review and changed course, choosing to focus on its domestic work. This was a cruel blow after expending a significant amount of time and money getting to what looked like the finish line, only to have the prize snatched away at the last moment.

The gambling regulator has reassured organizations dedicated to preventing gambling harm that its commitment to socially responsible gambling is paramount and displayed this when it provided support to two problem gamblers by sending them for treatment on the UK mainland.
Licensed Gaming operators contribute to a Social Responsibility Fund, however, this only generated revenue of £14,300 last year, and the regulator said this amount is far short of the money needed to provide comprehensive treatments for gambling issues in Jersey. The JGC says it will continue to try and find a solution to this issue.
The Commission continues to offer support to Islanders needing to travel to the UK in order to receive in-house counseling treatment and continues to work with a number of providers to ensure dedicated support is available for Jersey residents.
