Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Dutch Gaming Authority, has announced that the regulator will be taking a far more prominent role in the enforcement of legislation within the jurisdiction.

This policy change came into effect on December 1st and signals a change in the framework of the regulatory and government bodies that oversee the gambling industry in the Netherlands.

Previously, the KSA played a support role in the gaming industry and was more of an advisory body to gaming operators to ensure all gambling legislation in the jurisdiction was followed. The police and Public Prosecution Service were tasked with enforcing gambling legislation and dealing with operators who breached these rules, with the KSA providing administrative assistance.

This change in the structure of the gambling industry in the Netherlands means that the KSA will have a more independent role in overseeing the complete legislative process in the region.

KSA Given Powers to Enforce Gambling Legislation

KSA has been given the powers to ensure that gambling legislation is not broken in the region, and the regulator can work independently to take a more proactive approach in overseeing gaming laws in the Netherlands and now has the legislative power to enforce gambling rules.

If there are breaches of the gaming legislature, the KSA can impose sanctions and penalties for those who break the rules. Plus, the power in law to impose any punishments for operators who break gambling rules in the country.

Regulator to Focus on Illegal Gambling

The Dutch Gaming regulator has given a warning to land-based casinos and gambling companies in the country that it intends to proactively address unlicensed retail gambling locations in the country, naming its top priorities as illegal poker tournaments and unlicensed venues with gaming machines.

The KSA has stated it is pursuing this strategy because it believes that a well-regulated gaming industry will provide a secure environment for customers and protect the integrity of the gambling sector in the Netherlands.
