Leeds and East Midlands to Benefit from GamCare’s New Money Guidance Service
GamCare, the UK charity that offers support to those struggling with problem gambling, has announced the launch of a new Money Guidance Service that aims to provide financial advice to those who are experiencing difficulties due to gambling losses.
The service is available to those in Leeds and across the East Midlands, and it is available to anyone who has experienced hardship due to gambling. GamCare currently offers free one-to-one support sessions via the Leeds Community Gambling Service and throughout the East Midlands, and it operates the free 24/7 National Gambling Helpline.
The new Money Guidance Service is open to those already receiving support from the charity’s various treatment centers. It will offer advice on spending habits, bankroll management, recognizing spending triggers, and how to create boundaries that will lead to better habits.
The service is also available to those who are affected by someone else’s gambling habits and will offer guidance on their rights and how to improve their finances.
With a cost-of-living crisis impacting households across the Leeds region – especially off the back of a World Cup, a challenging Christmas period, and almost five weeks since payday – we know many people may turn to gambling and end up in a worse situation. This new service will work with those whose finances have been negatively impacted by gambling, sharing day-to-day guidance they can put in place to help them get back on the right path.
Nicola O’Neill, a Service Manager for East Midlands at GamCare, explained that one in seven people who contacted the National Gambling Helpline in 2022 did so due to someone else’s gambling, and as such, it is important that support is available to all those affected. She added, “We hope the Money Guidance Service is a way to help people who have been negatively impacted by someone else’s gambling, not just the gambler themselves, and help improve their situation.”
