The Michigan Gaming Control Board said more than 80 of the first 100 free licences were claimed within two weeks of the program’s launch. The latest expansion gives more residents access to gambling blocking software at no cost.

The new MGCB announcement follows the regulator’s original April partnership, when Michigan began offering free Gamban licenses to residents as part of its responsible gaming work.

Gamban blocks access to gambling websites and apps across major platforms, including Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. One licence can cover unlimited household devices, while installation support is available through Gamban.

MGCB Says Demand Exceeded Expectations

MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said the quick uptake showed a clear need for practical tools that help residents limit access to online gambling.

The response from Michigan residents in the first two weeks of this program exceeded our expectations and speaks to a genuine need in our communities. We acted quickly to secure an additional 100 licenses so that no resident seeking this kind of support is turned away.

The original partnership made Gamban available through free Gamban licenses for Michigan residents without requiring them to be enrolled in a self-exclusion program. Licences ranging from one to five years were offered free of charge.

Williams said the expansion was designed to remove barriers for people seeking immediate support.

“The strong response to this program tells us that residents want accessible, device-level support, and we intend to keep delivering it”, Williams added. “These additional licenses mean more Michigan residents can take back control, free of charge.”

Software Covers Legal and Unregulated Sites

The MGCB said Gamban blocks gambling content regardless of regulatory status. That includes online casinos, sports betting, poker, slots, social casinos, crypto gambling and NFT-based wagering.

The wider coverage is important because blocking only licensed operators would leave users exposed to unregulated and black-market sites. Michigan is one of the largest legal online gambling markets in the US, but regulators have continued to stress that market growth must be matched by responsible gambling safeguards.

The MGCB cited National Council on Problem Gambling estimates that around 2% of Americans, or roughly six million people, meet the criteria for gambling addiction.

The additional licences are expected to remain available to eligible Michigan residents through the expanded program.
