September Sports Betting Surges to $512.2m in Massachusetts

Massachusetts has published its sports betting revenue for September, showing an overall sports betting record handle of $512.2m, 62.7% higher than the $314.9m in August.
September’s handle also represents the second-highest monthly total since Massachusetts launched its regulated online sports betting market in March of this year. Of the total, online wagering contributed $499.7m, while retail sportsbooks accounted for $12.4m.
Operators amassed $49.8 million in betting revenue during the month, marking a substantial increase of 119.4% from the $22.7 million recorded in August. This was also the second-highest revenue since the state’s legal betting market went live. It was surpassed only by May’s $59.4m.
DraftKings Set New Record with $290m September Bets
Among the individual operators, DraftKings continues to maintain its dominant position in the Bay State. The business recorded $28.2m in revenue from a record-high $290.1m in bets. FanDuel was in the second spot again, with $14.2 million in revenue derived from a $121.9 million handle. BetMGM claimed the third position with $3.7m in revenue from $33.5m in total bets.
In the retail sector, MGM Springfield secured the highest betting revenue at $289,320 from $1.6m in bets. Plainridge Park Casino, though took more retail wagers at $4.6m, recorded a slightly lower income of $282,699.
Encore Boston Harbor recorded the highest number of wagers at $6.2m but is in the third spot with the lowest revenue of $242,313.
Casino Sector Faces Further Decline
Looking at land-based casinos, table games, and slots had a combined gross gaming revenue of $90.4m, a 7.7% decrease from $97.9m recorded in August. Of the total, physical slots revenue accounted for $62.9m, while table games revenue amounted to $27.5m.
Massachusetts reported a combined sports wagering and casino revenue of $140.2m in September, an increase of 16.3% month-on-month. The Bay State received $9.9m in sports betting tax revenue and $25.7m in land-based casino tax.
