Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA) has announced that some of its members have joined together and provided $3 million to fund financial counselling services for Australians in need of this service.

RWA and Major Operators Collaborate for Safer Gambling

Founded in 2016, the RWA is made up of gambling companies that operate in the Australian region and have made a commitment to provide an environment of responsible gambling, while protecting customers and minimizing the potential harm to vulnerable players.

The members in this initiative are six of the biggest gaming operators in the region, including bet365, Betfair, Entain, PointsBet, Sportsbet, and Unibet. The online operators will fund the scheme for three years and have collaborated with the Australian government and a range of industries, including banking, insurance, energy, and counselling to set up the program. Together, they have set up a not-for-profit organization to allocate the funding.

Financial counselling services throughout Australia can benefit from this funding, and it is hoped that this will help people who are struggling with gambling issues.

RWA members are proud to set the industry standard for keeping customers safe, going well beyond the requirements set by governments. The number one priority for RWA and its members is to ensure that our customers can gamble in a safe environment while having access to the tools to stay in control of their gambling behavior.

Help Australians Manage Finances

A spokesperson for the RWA said this measure is additional support for vulnerable customers on top of the many tools the gambling industry already provides for players to gamble in a safe environment including mandatory age and identity verification, deposit limits, and self-exclusion tools.

The RWA approached the Australian government in 2021 and asked if some of its members could participate in the scheme and offered to provide funding.

It is hoped the scheme will provide support to players who are struggling with gambling and help them manage their financial circumstances. Also, financial counselling and giving players access to financial planning skills should help customers in all aspects of their life in the future.
