The English Football Association (FA) has charged Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali for allegedly violating its betting rules.

According to the FA, Tonali placed bets on football matches on 50 occasions within two months, between August 12 and October 12, 2023, his first three months with Newcastle United.

Tonali is currently serving a 10-month ban over betting breaches in his homeland of Italy. He was sanctioned by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) last October after an investigation revealed that he had engaged in betting activities during his stint at Milan and Brescia. FIFA extended the ban globally, sidelining him in professional football competitions until August 27, 2024.

The FA statement read, "Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of The FA's Betting Rules. "It's alleged that the Newcastle United midfielder breached FA Rule E8 50 times by placing bets on football matches between August 12 2023 and October 12 2023." Sandro Tonali has until April 5 2024 to respond.

Newcastle’s Response

In response to the FA's announcement, Tonali's club, Newcastle, released a statement acknowledging the FA's charge and offering support to the 23-year-old midfielder.

Newcastle United acknowledges a misconduct charge received by Sandro Tonali in respect of alleged breaches of FA Betting Rules. Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations and he retains the club's full support. Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time."

Tonali May Not Get Additional Penalties

It is unsure whether Tonali will get another long ban if he is found guilty of the new misconduct charges. However, Journalist Luke Edwards reported that the Italian midfielder will likely not face an additional suspension. He stated that since Tonali had already admitted to placing the bets when questioned back in October, any additional penalties are expected to be served concurrently.

The FA also reportedly regards the 10-month worldwide ban imposed on the Newcastle midfielder as punishment for his bets in England and Italy.

Shohei Ohtani Betting Investigation

Toni's is the second high-profile player-related betting incident that has emerged this week. The first involves Shohei Ohtani's interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, in the US, who was accused of transferring at least $4.5m from Ohtani's bank to a California bookmaker.

The Los Angeles Dodgers star had denied involvement in the betting allegations and claimed he was unaware of the theft by Ohtani. However, the MLB's Department of Investigations has begun its formal process of investigating the issue.
