Howdy, partner! If you’re roaming around these parts of the Internet, you’re likely looking to learn more about the legendary Dead or Alive slot. This NetEnt game has achieved cult status among online gamblers. It’s still super popular today, despite being released 10 years ago and having a sequel.

While the “Dead or Alive” title comes from the wanted posters in the Wild West, the words also allude to something else. After a session, you might feel dead inside from blowing your balance on this high-risk slot. But if you land one of the top fixed jackpots, you’re likely to feel more alive than ever.

Now, you sure seem eager, but eagerness can get folks in trouble. For the best chance of winning when playing with real cash, prepare yourself by reading our review and testing the game for free here!

Features of the Dead or Alive Slot Machine

With its five reels and three rows, DOA has the configuration of a standard video slot. It sports nine paylines that are always active and pay from left to right. The Dead or Alive slot game isn’t exactly bursting with extravagant extra content, but its features still manage to excite.

You have the standard Wilds that substitute regular symbols to help form winning combinations. Scatters are also present. Landing two of them anywhere on the reels will get you a win equal to twice your bet, while three or more award increasingly higher payouts and activate a bonus round with 12 free spins.

While inside the bonus spins mode, you get an x2 multiplier on all your winnings. Also, if you get one or more Wilds then, they will stick to the reels for the remainder of the bonanza. Collecting all five will grant you an extra 5 free games. Hunting the elusive full line of scatters or Wilds is what every fan of this release is looking for.

A Theme That Takes You Back to the Old West

There’s a good reason why NetEnt has a reputation of a premium software developer. If you scroll below and try our Dead or Alive slot demo, we bet that you won’t feel like you’re inside a 10-year-old game. The title is immersive, as it submerges you into the atmosphere of a dusty 19th-century frontier town without the need for a cinematic intro.

There’s a storm approaching, and with it come five dangerous outlaws. As the sheriff, your task is to gun them down, although there are no such scenes in the game itself. The Wilds are in the shape of wanted posters. In the bonus mode, you get to see the faces of the bandits as they stick to the reels.

Appropriately stylized playing card symbols that run from 10 to Ace are accompanied by five more that are a part of every cowboy’s life. These include a shot glass, boots, a cowboy hat, gun belt, and a sheriff’s badge. You can see two crossed revolvers on the scatter symbol. The icons still look appealing. Some gamers ever prefer them to those in Dead or Alive 2.

Dead or Alive Slot: Review of the Buttons and How to Play

Slot games are quite easy to play, and DOA is no exception. There are not that many buttons to press, and all of them are located at the bottom of the screen. In the middle, you’ll see the big, round spin icon from where you activate the reels. “Max Bet” – an option that increases the bet to its top level while keeping the same coin value – is located to its right. The payouts in this game are fixed multipliers, and the paylines are always active. The Dead or Alive slot won’t punish those with smaller budgets, as you can have the full RTP value and enjoy every feature even on 0.09 per bet.

If you don’t want to press to spin every time, click on “Autoplay.” It will open an additional menu from where you can select between 10 and 1,000 automatic spins. In “Advanced settings,” you can further tweak autoplay. The betting level and coin value adjusters are on the bottom left, and so is the “info” button that contains the paytable and feature explanations.

The bonus round is activated each time you get 3+ scatters while having 5 of them also gives you the top “regular play” jackpot of x2,500 your bet. Additional game and sound settings can be found below the “i” button.

Payouts, RTP, Volatility

We’ve already touched upon the fact that this is a high-risk (AKA high volatility/variance) slot, but let’s dive a bit deeper to see what makes it that way. If you check out the paytable below, you might notice that the payout increase from a line of four symbols to a line of five is quite drastic. This is especially true for the wild and the scatter, where the jump is x10. So, if you’ve wondered why everyone is looking for a full line of those, now you have your answer.

With the Dead or Alive slot, NetEnt has intended for you to get a winning spin around 30% of the time. The 96.8% RTP rate is higher than average, but if you play short and fast, the results will vary greatly.

Tips for Playing Dead or Alive

When we take the above paragraph into account, it’s easy to see that a more conservative strategy will be beneficial for the Dead or Alive slot. Play with smaller bets, as it won’t be detrimental to you in any way. This will allow you to last for longer, which increases the chance to get one of those top payouts. Dead or Alive is a high-volatility slot despite its only nine paylines. With a wide betting range, ten bet levels, and fast-paced gameplay, it can easily eat into your bankroll. The biggest wins come during the free spins round during which re-triggering new free spins, getting sticky wilds and huge multipliers can pay 3,000x your bet. However, it’s best that you play at lower bet limits as it can take some time to trigger the free spins.

Dead or Alive on Mobile

DOA was released less than two years after the premiere of the first iPhone. Yeah, 2009 is that far away. However, its mobile variant is properly optimized and works seamlessly with the top smartphones and tablets of today. The layout of the buttons is a tad bit different, as the spin icon has incorporated the auto spin options and is located on the right side of the screen. Aside from that, the gameplay is identical to the desktop version.

Dead or Alive – a Slot Where You Need Bravery and Smarts

Some flowers bloom, others wither. Some cattle grow strong, others get slaughtered. Life is random and often feels unfair, and Dead or Alive ain’t different. Those who get a full scatter or wild line from it early are truly lucky, but most players will need to devise a sound plan and arm themselves with patience to achieve success.

Your best bet would be to establish a budget and understand that you’ll likely need several sessions to land something big. Playing at a safe casino that offers a good bonus is also imperative. You’re more than welcome to view our top 5 list or check out one of the many top casino reviews on this site. Good luck, partner!
