Protecting Children with the 2024 Gift Responsibly Campaign
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) has launched the 2024 Gift Responsibly Campaign as part of its efforts to educate the public about the unintended harm caused by gifting lottery tickets to children.

Supported by state lotteries, private companies, and individuals, the Campaign focuses on the potential risks associated with exposing young people to gambling.

The campaign cautions adults against normalizing gambling for children, even with activities that may appear to be harmless, such as gifting lottery tickets. Research suggests that early exposure to gambling could lead to adverse mental health outcomes and encourage riskier behaviors as children grow older.
In 2023, more than 150 lotteries and community organizations worldwide participated in the campaign, promoting its core message, “Lottery Tickets Aren’t Child’s Play”. This year, the campaign has already seen a higher level of engagement, particularly in the U.S.
Support from Industry and Government
Pollard Banknote Limited, a provider to the lottery industry, has played a major role in increasing the campaign’s reach. State lotteries such as the Illinois State Lottery, Colorado Lottery, and Wisconsin Lottery, along with organizations like the Virginia Council on Problem Gambling, have also given their support.
These organizations are helping to shine a light on the risks lottery products pose to children, including the potential for unhealthy gambling habits to develop over time. The widespread availability of lottery tickets often leads adults to underestimate their potential harm, which lends importance to awareness campaigns like this one.

The Gift Responsibly Campaign complements growing concerns about gambling’s broader societal impact. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently published a report on rising toll of gambling-related harm and called for stricter advertising regulations and greater public education.
Studies from countries such as Australia and Ireland have further shown the dangers of normalizing gambling in childhood. These findings reinforce the need for initiatives such as the Gift Responsibly Campaign, which seek to protect the next generation from long-term harm while promoting informed, responsible behavior among adults.
