The American Gaming Association (AGA) has released its latest survey on American’s betting plans which shows that approximately 73.5 million bettors in America plan to bet on the NFL this season.

The figure represents a 59% increase compared year-on-year to the approximately 46 million individuals reported to have engaged in NFL betting in 2022, as reported by the AGA.

According to the Association, it discovered through its survey that 19% of American adults plan to place a bet online, at a casino, or with a bookie this year, up 56% from a year ago.

Additionally, out of the entire U.S. adult population, 35.1 million individuals, equivalent to 14%, plan to bet online, whereas 13.6 million, or 5%, plan to place bets at physical sportsbooks.

37% of self-identified NFL fans are expected to place bets this season, marking a substantial 42% increase compared to last year. Sportsbooks are gearing up for a potential windfall as the opening NFL game of the season commences on Thursday.

NFL in a Growing Betting Era

The NFL was formerly a strong opponent of sports gambling, but its stance shifted when the Supreme Court, in 2018, cleared the path for states to legalize sports betting.

Now sports betting is legalized and live in 34 states including Washington, D.C., with four additional states looking to launch their sports betting markets in coming months.

The growth of legal gambling and the convenience of mobile wagering has attracted a substantial user base to leading platforms such as DraftKings, Caesars, FanDuel and BetMGM. It has also increased the competitiveness of the US iGaming and sports betting market. However, even with the crowded marketplace, new companies are joining the industry like ESPNBet

This growth also created numerous business opportunities for sports leagues and teams. In 2021, the NFL inked five-year agreements, totaling approximately $1 billion, with DraftKings, FanDuel, and Caesars, officially designating them as the league's sportsbook partners.

NFL Betting Infractions

However, the league warming up and adjusting to the evolving landscape of gambling does not come without its own problems. Player confusion regarding the NFL's betting regulations has resulted in several suspensions. In the past two years, more than 10 players have faced suspensions for violations of the league's gambling policy.

In June 2023, the league announced six rules to clarify its gambling policy for players including not betting on the NFL and not getting someone else to place wagers on American Football matches.

Last month, the football governing body appealed to federal authorities to address illegal gambling stating that it is an issue that cannot be ignored.
